Compress PNG images and keep transparency

PNG files from screenshots, logos and design exports are often far larger than they need to be. Here they are repacked with oxipng and, if you allow it, reduced to a smaller color palette.

Mode

Your files never leave this device. Everything is processed in the browser, nothing is uploaded.

    Lossless or reduced colors

With the quality slider at 95 or higher the picture stays identical pixel by pixel; only the way it is stored changes, which usually saves 5 to 25 percent. Lower values convert the image to a palette of up to 256 colors with alpha. That can cut a flat illustration or a screenshot by 60 to 80 percent, but photographs with smooth gradients may show banding.

When PNG is the wrong choice

A photo saved as PNG is huge. If you do not need transparency, convert it to JPG or WebP on the PNG to JPG or WebP pages: the same picture takes a fraction of the space.

    Questions

    Is the transparency kept?

Yes, the alpha channel stays in the result, including semi-transparent edges and shadows.

Why does my gradient look banded?

That is a side effect of fewer colors. Raise the slider to 95 or more for the lossless mode.

Is this the same as TinyPNG?

The idea is similar: a smaller palette plus better packing. The difference is that it all runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

    Does it support animated PNG?

No. Only the first frame is read, so animated files should not be processed here.
